Water is used as the primary symbol, representing purity and the washing away of sins.

What happens at an infant’s baptism?
The adult would stand in a baptistry (a separate building), or next to a font when the water is sprinkled over the head. Adult baptisms take place in other settings like rivers, the sea or even sometimes swimming pools!
The priest fully immerses the adult in the water.
