STEAM CELLS are undifferentiated cells, that is, capable of transforming into cells of different tissues or organs.

They are distinguished into:

  • Totipotent cells: capable of becoming part of

  • Pluripotent cells: they can transform into cells of many organs or tissues (but not all);
  • Unipotent cells: can become cells of only one type;

WHAT ARE STEM CELLS USED?

Research on stem cells, both adult and embryonic, is one of the most promising sectors in the field of medicine for the treatment of diseases that today leave no hope for many people affected in particular by neurodegenerative diseases.

The use of stem cells raises important ethical questions, as it involves moral considerations related to human life, genetic manipulation and possible medical applications. Some points for reflection include:

SOURCES OF STEM CELLS

Stem cells can derive from embryos, adult tissues or genetic engineering processes. The use of embryonic stem cells raises ethical concerns related to the destruction of embryos.

GENETIC MANIPULATION

The ability to genetically modify stem cells presents revolutionary opportunities for medicine, but also ethical challenges related to the possibility of creating genetically modified organisms or altering hereditary characteristics.

INFORMED CONSENT

Ensuring informed consent and autonomy of stem cell donors is crucial. This involves transparency regarding the use of cells, the potential risks and benefits, and the right to decide on one's own biological material.

EQUITY

Address ethical issues regarding equity in access to stem cell-based therapies, avoiding socio-economic disparities in the approach to new medical technologies.
