What's eSafety?
eSafety means using the internet and digital devices in a safe and responsible way. It includes protecting personal information, being aware of online risks, and using technology in a positive manner.
START
The right to privacy
The right to privacy is recognized as a fundamental right of individuals, directly linked to the protection of human dignity, and is also enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. The concept of privacy,, has evolved over time: from the right "to be left alone or to protect one's private sphere", today in the information society, it mainly refers to the right to access and control the use and circulation of one's personal data.
Personal Data
Personal data refers to "any information concerning identified or identifiable individuals, organizations, entities, associations, also through other information, such as through an identifying number or code. Personal data includes: name and surname or denomination; address or headquarters; tax code; but also a photo, a recording of a person's voice, their digital or vocal imprint".
Particular attention and greater protection are directed towards sensitive data, i.e., personal data that "may reveal racial and ethnic origin, religious or other beliefs, political opinions, membership of parties, trade unions or associations, health status, and the sexual life of individuals".
Protection of personal data
With Law No. 675 of December 31, 1996, the Guarantor for the protection of personal data is established, more commonly known as the Privacy Guarantor.
The Guarantor is an independent authority, tasked with ensuring the protection of rights and fundamental freedoms in the processing of personal data and respecting the dignity of individuals. The Guarantor examines citizens' complaints and reports, decides on appeals filed, oversees compliance with privacy protection rules, and prohibits, even ex officio, illicit or incorrect processing.
