You are the journalist: interview Sophie to get information about her journey through Ellis Island
After the health and legal inspections, immigrants arrived at a staircase which was divided in three aisles: detainees remained in the center and the other immigrants chose the right aisle or the left aisle according to their destination in the USA.
Immigrants were very tired but often cheered when arriving in New York Harbor.Officers checked the passengers' health: it could be very long for third-class passengers.
hatter > a person who makes and sells hatsunemployment > having no job 3 million marks = extremely expensive for the time sew > make clothes fortunate > lucky astounding > amazing wealth > fortune overwhelming > incredible
Long stairs led to a room where doctors checked each person and looked for any signs of trouble or contagious diseases, for example with a buttonhook.People with a disease were often sent back to their home countries.

The legal inspection

This document is a text which comes from a website. It's entitled The Legal Inspection. It talks about / deals with Ellis Island in New York City. It explains / describes how immigrants were welcomed when arriving in the USA. They had to answer 29 questions properly, be healthy, have skills and money to enter the USA.

The "Kissing Post" was an area where family and friends waited for their loved ones. When they saw each other, they kissed and hugged. The journey to America was finally over.
Inspectors asked 29 questions to each immigrant. There were interpretors to help communicate. If the immigrants didn't answer properly or were sick, they couldn't enter the USA.
The Registry Room was also called the Great Hall. It was really big and very noisy.Officials decided if immigrants could enter the USA or needed further examination.
Some passengers failed the health or legal inspections and had to stay in a dormitory room for a few days or a month. Then, officials decided if they could enter the USA or not.
It took one or two weeks.Passengers were divided: the richest stayed in cabins, the others stayed in the steerage. The ship was overcrowded so the travelling conditions were hard. The ticket cost between $30 to $90.
This document is an extract of a ship manifest. It dates back from 1909 and refers to Italian immigrants. Inspectors used this document to check the information about them. They asked 29 questions.
Doctors developped a system to identify immigrants who needed medical attention. - Some immigrants were marked with a symbol if they were sick; and were kept for further examination. - The others continued the inspection.
Passengers were given a numbered identity tag and had to reach Ellis Island main building. They had to queue to enter the Baggage Room and leave their belongings.
