Born on September 15, 1969 in Saint-Pierre (Reunion Island), Charly Lesquelin has lived in Saint-Joseph since the late 1990s and has exhibited in mainland France since the early 2000s. Painter. Author. Composer. Singer, drummer and leader of the group Gondwana, formed in 1989 with André Barré and Dimitri Broeders to perform Reunionese reggae in Creole.

Since 1992, he has been painting his native Reunion Island and its Creole identity. Numerous exhibitions around the world, including 2008 in Kuala Lumpur, Paris and 2009 in China. Awards : First prize at the Arène des Arts in Saint-Gilles-les-Bains (May 2005). Prix d'excellence "Séradour" from the Société nationale des Beaux Arts 2008 for a large-format portrait entitled "Fournaise". Prix Seradour for his painting "Fournaise" at the Salon des Artistes Contemporains organized by the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris (2009).

His passion for painting...
At the age sixteen he has already shown his interest in painting, but it was at the age of twenty one that he has decided to become a full time painter. To earn a living he has done a portraiture for more than a decade but his trip abroad has opened his eyes to give more focus in his personal expression. He is the reunion's first street portraitist.
As he grows in his creative endeavors he finds fascination with painting the eyes of people believing that human eye is the window of the soul, and an element that aids him see the goodness in everything. His opportunity to exhibit abroad is a good learning experience for him to encourage the younger generation of painters in his country to go and explore the artistic opportunities around the world. For Charly, life as an artist is a gift, thus, he keeps an open eye, embrace change and serves as a post of support for other hoping to be a great partner of change and development in his country.
