OSTRAVA:

Engineer´s Quest

held under the auspices of the deputy Mgr. Andrea Hoffmannová Ph.D

I speak to you from a time when Ostrava, my beloved city, was black with coal and soot: mines, factories, and more mines and factories. I, an old mining engineer, want to know if it will always be this way. Or will Ostrava change...? Will it turn green someday? Will it have beautiful buildings, parks, concert halls, libraries, and theatres? I hid this letter in a magical place in the newly built town hall of the great Ostrava, during the mayorship of Jan Prokeš. You, who will find it in the future, please report to me! Convey a message to my spirit, which found sanctuary at the venerable Slezskoostravský hrad. But it won't be that simple. To glimpse the future of Ostrava and be able to speak with my spirit about it, you must visit 10 significant spots in Ostrava, complete tasks, and thus obtain 10 keys. Only through their energy will the path open to you... You are my hope, unknown friend! Engineer

So where do we go first?

Planetárium Ostrava

Planetárium Ostrava, which belongs to VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava, is surrounded by meadows, fields and forest in a popular green area between Poruba and Krásné Pole. The planetarium offers many programs and events for visitors of all ages. The programs and activities are primarily focused on astronomy and other natural and technical sciences. The planetarium, where advanced projection technology will project the entire night sky or the universe into the dome above your heads, is an unforgettable experience. We would not be able to get this unique feeling of a real starry sky because cities are usually polluted by light. Let´s go to the third spot.

Nová radnice Ostrava

Nová radnice Ostrava, which is our eighth stop, is the largest town hall in the Czech Republic. It was built in 1920´s and it is the headquarters of the City of Ostrava, the Moravian Silesian Scientific Library, and the tourist information centre. From the 73 m high terrace of the tower, you can admire the beautiful views of the town, the Beskydy Mountains, and the bordering territories of Poland. An interesting detail of the Town Hall is the wooden lift, called „paternoster” dated 1928. The lift was renovated in 2004 and it was proposed to be included on the Register of Technical Heritage.

Landek

Landek hill is located on the confluence of the Ostravice and Odra rivers and is only 280 meters high. Land-ecke, from German, means ‘the corner of the land’. Although it has not grown much in recorded history, it has accumulated as many curiosities during its existence as other sights in the Czech Republic and it offers many opportunities for tourists to delve deeper into the history of this mining region. A very specific dialect used to be spoken at this place, which you can try yourself at our fourth stop.

Divadlo loutek

Divadlo loutek has a very long tradition in the Czech Republic. If you enjoy puppets, you shouldn´t miss a performance in this modern and unique theatre space! The theatre, which is our last stop, also offers special events and workshops where you can make your own puppet under the supervision of an experienced marionette craftsman. Divadlo Loutek is also in charge of the Spectaculo Interesse festival that started in 1995 and has become the largest international puppetry festival in the Czech Republic and one of the most important in Europe.

Zlatá tretra

Zlatá tretra Ostrava is the annual Czech athletics meeting in which the world's biggest stars participate. The history of one of the oldest athletic competitions began at the Ostrava – Vítkovice city stadium in 1961, and since then, except for 1999, the stands there have been filled with athletics fans. The first year it was held on a cinder track, and few could have guessed how popular Zlatá tretra would become. Men and women compete in many track and field events such as the 100 m, 400 m, 1,500 m and 20,000 m races, pole vault and high jump, long jump, shot put, discus, javelin, and others. Throughout the years, many legendary athletes have competed at the Vítkovice Stadium, including Usain Bolt, Veronica Campbell-Brown, or Jan Železný, to name a few. Since 2019, it's been a part of a top-tier global athletics series called the World Athletics Continental Tour – Gold. This competition is the second-highest level in the world, right after the Diamond League. Let´s explore our ninth place.

Dolní oblast Vítkovice

Ostrava, The Steel heart of the Czech Republic, there are some things that you can only experience here, in our fifth stop. One of them is a visit to an industrial area formerly known for coal mining and producing iron during most of the last century which is how Ostrava got its nickname. A massive and once neglected complex with an area of ten hectares has a completely new purpose and today Dolní oblast Vítkovice serves as an educational, social and cultural centre that offers entertainment for young and old visitors from all around the world. It is one of the few places you can see blast furnaces and technical buildings with your own eyes.

ZOO

Nestled not far from Ostrava's city centre, the Ostrava Zoo is a green oasis, offering more than just a home for animals. As the second-largest zoo in the Czech Republic, Ostrava Zoo is a 92-hectare large area that houses over 400 animal species. From majestic lions to colourful flamingos and fascinating reptiles like crocodiles, the zoo provides an exciting representation of the Earth's diverse wildlife. In addition to breath-taking animal exhibits, the zoo offers visitors the opportunity to dive into the world of exotic flora with four botanical trails: the Path of Shadows, the Path of Water, the Path of Forest, and the Wetlands Trail. Our journey begins here.

Halda Ema

The heap was formed by dumping waste material from the Trojice coal mine in Ostrava. Its establishment likely dates back to before the year 1920. Originally, the heap reached a height of 327 meters, but it decreased due to burning. In the sixties, the interior of the heap ignited, and it has been burning ever since. Temperatures inside the hill reach up to 1500°C, leading to the formation of new rare minerals – porcelanites and jaspers. Ema, our seventh stop, has decreased by about 8 meters from its original height since the dumping was completed. The slopes of the hill are overgrown with volunteer trees. Due to the high temperatures inside Ema, there is never any snow at its summit. The northern side is covered with dense forest, while the southern side (which is still burning) is currently bare and covered with thermophilic steppe flora. The visible smoke, seemingly emanating from the mountain, makes Ema magical. White clouds of gases mainly contain sulfur dioxide.

??? - Bělský les

In October 2023, a new recreation and relaxation project was completed in Bělský les. The half-kilometer-long route leads from the gushing springs and restored wells in the Bělský les to the stream in the valley. The sixth stop, the 502-meter-long route also includes several interactive educational boards, the Priessnitz baths and a wooden figure. Based on the pictures, guess the name of the route, in English, of course.

Slezskoostravský hrad

Slezskoostravský hrad is the only, at least partially preserved castle in the city of Ostrava. The first written record comes from the end of the 13th century, when the castle served as a royal stronghold. Due to mining activities the castle sank by an unbelievable 16 meters and its condition deteriorated. Now, the castle is open to visitors for tours and social events. Let´s explore our second stop.

Slezskoostravský hrad

Thank you, friends. My hopes have come true. Now - thanks to you - I see that Ostrava, my beloved city, has a future. I see culture, I see greenery, I see development. And yet, the legacy of INDUSTRY, and therefore the legacy of my life, is not forgotten, no, it is not forgotten. It has just found new forms... Yours, Engineer
