Substitution is the first stage of the SAMR model. The use of technology is a direct substitute for a different tool.
Example
Instead of writing and essay with apaper and pencil, students use apps such a Google Docs to type their essay.
Modification
Modification is the third stage of the SAMR model. The use of technology allows for a significant redesign of the learning task.
Example
Students send their completed work to other students or peers for tips and pointers
Redefinition
Redefinition is the fourth stage of the SAMR model. The use of technology allows for the creation of new tasks that could not have been accomplished without the new tool.
Example
Students create a video of their typed out essay to create a short movie or clip.
