Firs act

The play begins with Duke Theseus of Athens preparing for his wedding to Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons.

Meanwhile, Hermia, in love with Lysander, is forced to marry Demetrius.

Hermia and Lysander plan to escape into the nearby forest.

They confide in Helena, in love with Demetrius, hoping she can convince him to love her.

Second act

In the forest, Oberon, the king of the fairies, argues with his queen, Titania, over a shape-shifting boy.

Oberon instructs his mischievous servant, Puck, to use a magic flower to make Titania fall in love with the first creature she sees upon waking.

Oberon also orders to make Demetrius fall in love with Helena, but Puck mistakenly applies the potion to Lysander.

Third act

Lysander wakes up and falls madly in love with Helena, abandoning Hermia.

Demetrius also pursues Helena.

Oberon realizes Puck's mistake and attempts to remedy this by enchanting Lysander for making him fall in love with Hermia again.

Fourth act

Meanwhile, a group of Athenian tradesmen led by Peter Quince prepares a play to be performed at Theseus's wedding.

Among them is Bottom, a weaver, who is transformed into a donkey by Puck as a prank.

Titania, under Oberon's spell, falls in love with Bottom and lavishes him with attention.

Fifth act

Eventually, the lovers are reunited with their rightful partners.

In the end, the lovers return to Athens to celebrate the triple wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta, Hermia and Lysander, and Helena and Demetrius.
