The Top of the Code Blue Cart
On the top of the code blue arrest cart, you will find the following:
- ECG Paper
- Box of Gloves
- Defib- Pad ( blue and white package or white and red package)
- Mutlifunction electrode
- ECG Conductive Adhesive Electrodes
You will also find an medication tray. To open slide the blue cover forward. What medications are available?
- Epinephrine 1mg/10ml ( 8 vials)
- Dextrose 50% 50ml (1 vial)
- Calcium Chloride 10% 10ml (1 vial)
- Sodium Bicarbonate 8.4% 50ml (4 vials)
Controlled sustances cannot be kept in the code blue arrest cart, these items will need to be retireved from the ADU (i.e. override). Click link to learn more.
Front Side of theCode Blue Arrest Cart
At the front of the code blue cart, you will find three drawers which inculdes the necessary items required in an code blue. There is also an backboard at the front of the cart as well. Some code blue cart, may have the backboard at the back. What is inside the drawers?
- Top Drawer ( Airway- intubation and oral airway)
- Second Drawer ( Blood work and IV supplies )
- Third Drawer (Central Line Insertion Kit)
- Last Drawer (Diffcult Airway Supplies)
To gain access to the backboard and drawers, you will need to break the red tag and pull up the red leaver.
Left Side of Heart Start Philips Monitor
On left side of Philips Monitor, you will find four accessories.
- Test load
- Blood Pressure Tubing attached to blood pressure cuff.
- Oxygen Tubing
- 5 lead ECG
Remember Once the code blue has been cleared or cancelled, it is important to ensure that the blood pressure cuff and monitor is returned to the unit. These items will not be replaced by central equipment.
Right Side of the Code Blue Arrest Cart
On the upper right side of the code blue cart, you will find the following items:
- Full oxygen tank
- Yellow sharps container
PPE Cart
The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) cart always sit right beside the crash cart. All code blues at Mackenzie Health are protected. What does this mean? Before entering into code blue room, each staff member is required to don the appropriate PPE which includes an N95mask, face shied, isolation and gloves. During an code blue, the PPE chart is brought outside of the patient room by the second responder. Open the PPE cart by breaking the red tag. Grab an package that coincides with your N95 Mask fit number.
Right Side of the Code Blue Arrest Cart
On the lower right side of the code blue cart, you will find the following items:
- Portable suction with connecting tubing
- Yankauer Suction catheter
- 14F Suction Catheterr
Remember If you are assigned to perfrom an quality check of the code blue cart. You need to verify that these items are present and the portable suction device is functional. Do this by turning the machine on and off. The portable suction device should be plugged into the wall outlet.
Heart Start Philips Monitor
At the top of the code blue cart, you will find the Philips Monitor. This monitor can be used to determine cardiac rythms, deliver a shock and perfom other functions. You wanted to ensure you see an green check mark, this tell you that the monitor is functional and good to use. Remember In the event of an code blue, you want to ensure the green and black cord is pulled into the monitor. You will then attach the defbrilliator pads to the patient ensure it is connected to the green and black therapy cord. Click link below to learn more.
Right Side of the Code Blue Arrest Cart
The right side of the Code Blue Arrest Cart has the supplies need to start an intravenous bolus and or continuous medication therapy.This includes:
- Primary Set IV Tubing
- Secondary Set IV Tubing
- Normal Saline Bags ( 500ml, 1000ml)
- Dextrose Bags
- IV Nitroglycerin bag
- Filtered IV Tubing
Any additional fluids or solutions required will have to be removed from the supply room. For example, Ringer Lactate.
Code Blue Cart IV Pole
On the code blue arrest cart, you will find the following items hanging on the IV pole:
- Clipboard with CPR record and debrief form
- Algorithm Cards for Advanced Cardiac Life Support
- Safety Leader Checklist
- Non-rebreather oxygen mask
- Assembled Doposable Bag-Valve Mask (BVM)device with O2 tubing and HEPA Filter
Remember Once you have activated an code blue and the code blue arrest cart has arrived to the patient room, it is the responsability of the second responder to apply an non-breather if one has not been already applied and turn up the O2 flowmeter to 15L.
