The Role of Behaviorism in Learning: Observational Learning, Rewards, Punishment.
Matthew, Jon
Idea of Behavioral Learning Theory
Behavioral learning theory emerged as a reaction against introspective psychology, to focusing on observable and measurable behaviors (National University). It applies that environmental stimuli and consequences shape behavior through operant conditioning
Benefits to working with a Behavioral Learning
Implementing a behavioral learning model in education offers benefits such as providing a ideal approach to teaching, fostering a positive learning environment through positive reinforcement, and allowing for effective assessment (National University). Benefits for teachers and students may include objective measurement of performance, improved classroom behavior management, motivation for learning etc.
Why it is important to understand?
Understanding behaviorism is important because it gives insights into how environmental factors influence learning and behavior. It allows teachers to structure their teaching approach based on observable behaviors (National University) and use reinforcement strategies effectively. By understanding behaviorism teachers may be able to create a learning environment to meet the needs of individual students.
Reward And Punishment
Reward: a "reward" is a positive consequence or stimulus given after a desired behavior, designed to increase the likelihood of that behavior being repeated (Khan Academy) This could look like - A child receiving a treat after completing their homework on time. - An employee being given a bonus for meeting or exceeding their sales targets. Punishment: punishment It refers to the the removal of positive stimuli to decrease the likelihood of a behavior being repeated in the future. 4. A student being given detention for talking out of turn in class. 5. A person receiving a fine for violating a traffic rule.
Philosophy
According to behaviorism, psychology should focus on studying behavior rather than the inner mind. It argues that behavior can be described and explained without reference to mental events or internal psychological processes. John B. Watson is known to be the father of behaviorism psychology. His work occurred in the 20th century, which made a impactful contribution to psychology.
Conclusion
Behaviorism introduced important concepts such as operant conditioning, which highlights the role of reinforcement and punishment in learning and behavior change. It provided a scientific framework for understanding how behaviors are acquired and modified through the manipulation of external stimuli.
