Animals in WW1

Mules were use to transport heavy things like cannons when soldiers were short of horses

Carrier pigeon were used to send messages from the trenches to the military base in their state to let know the how the war was going

Gold fishes were used to prove if the gas masks where clean, if the fish in the water dies when the mask was immersed it wasn't clean, if the fish rest alive the mask was clean

Horses at the satrt were use to attack enemys but attacks like this were a fail because of the machines guns so they start to use them to transport heavy things and also for ambulances

Hawks were used by germans to kill the carriers pigeons to prevent the British from sending messages to headquarters.

Dogs where sends from trenches in the minefields to see where were the mines and for let them explode

the dogs in ww1

Dogs played an important military role for most European armies during World War I, serving in a variety of tasks. Dogs hauled machine gun and supply carts. They also served as messengers, often delivering their missives under a hail of fire. Though it is difficult to fully account for their numbers, according to one French source “more than two thousand dogs” were in service on the Western Front at one time during the war.

The Imperial War Museums believes over 16 million total animals were in service during the course World War I.

sergeant stubby military service

Stubby served with the 102nd Infantry Regiment in the trenches in France for 18 months and participated in four offensives and 17 battles. He entered combat on February 5, 1918, at Chemin des Dames, north of Soissons, and was under constant fire, day and night for over a month. In April 1918, during a raid to take Seicheprey, Stubby was wounded in the foreleg by retreating Germans throwing hand grenades. He was sent to the rear for convalescence and, as he had done on the front, improved morale. When he recovered from his wounds, Stubby returned to the trenches

In his first year of battle, Stubby was injured by mustard gas. After he recovered, he returned with a specially designed gas mask to protect him
