ww1: the role of the animals

In the World War 1 were used over 16 million of animals, of which 10 between horses, mules and donkeys. Every animal had his different role. They were used for fight but also in other situations, as ambulances and supply wagons, communications but especially for transports. These animals in those years lived a terrible life. Some of them were inside the trenches (long ditches dug in the mud) where there was poor hygiene (some of them died for this reason) and several were overused, up to the point that died for starvation, exaustion and stuck in the mud. At the end of the war only 1 out of 5 animals survived.
