History

the triumph of death

This is a painting that depicts what happened during the plague and it did not spare anyone, not even the rich, we understand it from the clothes and accessories because the sovereigns are also there. It is depicted by a skeletal horse with a skeletal person on top. Death in the Middle Ages was seen both as an anguish and as obsession because it was now part of everyday life. With the introduction of christianity this vision changes because with the concept of heaven and God it was seen as a salvation. Then with the plague everyone got scared and in the clash between life and death, it was the latter than emerged victorious because no one was able to fight it.

the meeting between the living and the dead

The rock church of Melfi dedicated to Santa Margherita contains a cycle of frescoes populated by the best-known saints of the Eastern and Western tradition. In this sanctoral, where evidence of mystical asceticism and tragic martyrdom alternate, an unexpected episode of macabre art appears. It is the scene of the three living nobles who meet their death in the guise of the skeletons of as many revenants.

while the living were hunting, the two skeletons burst onto the road of the nobles and seem to utter a vehement "memento mori", a warning about the transience of life and the proximity of death. The warning messages of the medieval meditatio mortis seem to resonate: “Remember that you must die” or, more effectively, “You are as we were, you will be as we are”. The skeletons are in an upright position, have whitish bones and bellies crawling with putrefaction worms. They wave their arms and hands in a threatening manner. Their skulls have a frightening quality, with very pronounced jaws, a high and spacious forehead, and empty eye sockets. Originally, a third skeleton was perhaps painted to the right of the two, probably depicted lying on the ground, which was lost when the plaster fell.

The Korean series "Black"

In this 2017 series we have a different representation of death. The grim reaper or angel of death is a supernatural figure representing death. Accompany souls to hell. He is generally represented holding a scythe, a tunic and a black hooded cloak.

The plot

A grim reaper is forced to track down his fugitive partner, and in the process uncovers the truth about a series of unsolved murders dating back twenty years. Investigating crimes complicates his primary role of guiding the dead to the afterlife, especially after he falls in love with a human woman, breaking supernatural rules against involvement in mortal affairs.
