FOOD

Suggestions on Food Items
Special spices or ingredients for foods from your home country/culture. (Markets in Hawaiʻi may not have the spices you are used to, and as you cook your own meals in the dorms, you will want a taste of home and want to share your home foods with others).
Light, non-perishable snacks or foodstuffs from home (As you get settled and adjust to new foods, you may find it helpful to have some comfort items from home. Similar foods in Hawaiʻi may be relatively expensive, so it is nice to have some of these items as you adjust your budget and tastes).
Utensils (fork, spoon, chopsticks, basic cooking supplies) for first meals in the dormitories. (A sale of gently-used household goods is typically held during CBI, although supplies are limited. In addition, free shopping shuttles will be available to transport students to nearby stores).
Hawaii has rules regarding food items (Fresh fruit, plants, etc) that cannot be brought into the state. Be sure to only pack non-perishable items and refer to the TSA list.
ROOM
Menu
Suggestions on Room Items
- A few photographs of your home, family, and friends, or other items of sentimental value.
- Size Twin XL bedsheets to fit the dormitory beds (38” x 80” / 96.5 x 203 cm). Pillows and other bedding.
- Optionally, you may order these items online from a US website and have them delivered to the dormitory a week or two prior to your arrival.
- VOLTAGE-COMPATIBLE electronics (US outlets are 120V) and adapters for US plugs.
- (Please see info for the type of plugs used in the United States: USA – Power Plugs & Sockets: Travel Adapter Needed? (power-plugs-sockets.com).
- We strongly encourage you to purchase these online or from your home country before you arrive as they are difficult to find and much more expensive locally).
Health

Suggestions on Health Related Items
Extra pair of glasses or contact lenses
Please note that some health items and services such as eyeglasses and dental care are not included as benefits in insurance plans in the U.S. and can be very expensive. If you will be coming from an area where health items and services are less expensive than in Hawai‘i, we suggest that you bring the items listed here
Adequate supply of any prescribed drugs you currently take (and the physician’s prescription)
Have all dental work completed before you come to Honolulu and make an effort to take care of any personal health problems before beginning your fellowship.
