Priestesses were taught their temple duties and presided over religious ceremonies. They were essential for Aztec religious festivals. Priestesses were dedicated to the goddess of corn dressed in feathers and painted faces during the ceremony of Quecholli.

Aztec religion was polytheistic, which means they believed in many gods. They scheduled festivals, government ceremonies, and even wars in the Aztec Calendar.Religion was part of all levels of Aztec society. Religion was controlled by the high priests who also governed the main temples.

In Aztec mythology, Xochiquetzal, which means maiden, was the goddess of fertility, beauty and love. She was the protector of young mothers and a patroness of pregnancy, childbirth, and the crafts practiced by women such as weaving and embroidery.
