I love making food for people!I also filmed and edited some cooking videos for fun Highest compliment received: “not that sweet”-- my parents and my dance teacher
Favorite composer- Shostakovich!
I admire Shostakovich’s ability to produce anything from beautiful melodies and playful tunes to complete despair, sarcasm, and cynicism while constantly feeling the threat of death under the Stalin government. He also led me to do more research on musicians under political pressure and how they secretly fought back (Wilhelm Furtwangler, Richard Strauss). And also how music was used as propaganda specifically in Nazi Germany. I watched a documentary about the orchestra in Auschwitz and it was very interesting seeing a cellist there describe her experience.
During the summer training for the World Dance Championship, my phone was tasked to record everyone while we practiced techniques over and over to make sure that we were synced together. As much as I would love to keep all of the videos after the competition is over, my phone storage said no. So I decided to edit a montage to pay tribute to that tiring but fulfilling time! (also so that I can delete all the videos)
Poetry
I had always struggled with writing in English despite loving writing in Chinese and wanting to become a writer when I was younger. When I first got to the U.S., I made the mistake of confining myself to only do the things I am good at, which did not include writing. Now, I enjoy the process of improving in writing because it’s what I love. Here are some poems I wrote in my Creative Writing class this quarter.
Ever since I fell in the rabbit hole of keyboard building I have not been able to turn back. Modifying the keyboard to each person's preference in the sound and feel of a keypress is just so satisfying. I was so known for my random keyboard knowledge of switches, boards, plates, and modding techniques that one of my friends actually called me "keyboard" as a nickname. Because of this reputation, I was able to sell pre-built and customized keyboards since it's such a niche skill.
Journaling
I started journaling in 2019. Looking back at my evolution in journaling, it's not just about my improvement in art style and organization skills, but it's more like a gradual change of life ideals. In middle school/9th grade, I was too obsessed with the formality and the look of the spreads. I had many aesthetic but incomplete spreads. As long as I found a part that wasn't as perfect as I wanted it, I will scratch the whole spread and try again. But as my workload increased, I began to plan my spreads less and focus more on functionality. I still occasionally did the art part in journaling for my own enjoyment, but I became more spontaneous with my drawings, sometimes even purposefully making it not as perfect to break outside my comfort zone. Sometimes that brings me new inspirations! (Example spreads on the right)
