archimedes
Archimedes was an ancient mathematician who lived 200 years before Christ’s birth. He loved math so much that sometimes he forgot to eat while he was figuring problems. Archimedes is considered to be one of the most brilliant mathematicians in history. He figured out many complicated mathematical equations. but his main job was to solve problems for the King of Syracuse, which was a part of Sicily in Italy. Legend has it that the king worried that the royal crown maker might be replacing some of the gold in his crowns with a less valuable material. The king asked Archimedes to find a way to determine if the crowns were 100 percent gold.
Archimedes thought of the solution while in his bathtub. He decided to enjoy the peace and quiet and lowered himself into the water. As he did so, he saw that some water overflowed and spilled onto the floor. He realized that the amount of water that spilled was equal to the volume of his body. He suddenly had a brilliant idea! He remembered that gold was denser than other metals, which meant that a crown of pure gold would have a smaller volume than a crown of mixed metals with the same weight. He could use this fact to compare the crown with a lump of pure gold and see if they displaced the same amount of water or not. He was so excited by his discovery that he forgot where he was and what he was doing. He jumped out of the pool and shouted “Eureka! Eureka!"
He was overjoyed by his success and proud of his method. He decided to write a letter to the king and explain his findings. He also decided to write a book about his discovery and call it “On Floating Bodies”. He thought that his book would be a great contribution to science and that everyone would admire him for it.
He didn’t realize that his book would also include a hilarious story that would make people laugh for centuries to come. He didn’t realize that his name would become synonymous with a naked man running in the street and shouting “Eureka! Eureka!”
