Nelson Mandela was born in Sud-Africa in 1918. He studied Law at university and he became a lawyer in Johannesburg, helping poor black people.
In 1944 he joined the African National Congress (ANC) a protest moviment that wanted black South Africans to have the same rights as the white people.

Mandela criticised the governament because it banned the ANC so he organised protests.
At the age 46, he was arrested and he was sent to prison on Robben Island for life. Conditions at the prison were very hard.

In 1990, Mandela was released from prison after 27 years.
Mandela in 1994 was elected president of South Africa, but he didn't want revenge for have been unjustly arrested and he didn't want black and white to crash.

Madiba, national hero and symbol of apartheid, passed away during the night at the age of 95. Flags at half-mast and a state funeral for a man who fought in prison for 27 years. A serious infection had struck him.
