Polypad

Lessons

Mathigon offers a library of interactive activities. The most popular among 2-5th grade teachers is Multiplication by Heart. This activity uses spaced repetition to help students improve their multiplication facts.

The polypad is a veritable playground for teachers and students. It has a whole host of digital manipulatives including number tiles, clocks, money, and more!

Mathigon offers a lesson library that you can search for pre-made Polypad lessons as well as lesson plans for grades K-12.

Creating a Polypad Activity

Creating a Polypad Activity

  1. Determine which standard or skill you wish to address.
  2. Log into Mathigon and click on the Polypad tab at the top of the screen.
  3. Using the tools menu in the upper left corner of the polypad, identify the manipulatives that you will need in order to teach or assess the skill.
  4. Click and drag a digital manipulative to place it on the Mathigon Canvas.
  5. You can select the manipulative to view options and its properties.
  6. To copy a manipulative, you can simply type "C" and it will create a copy for you.
  7. To resize a manipulative you can select and click and drag to make the item larger or smaller.
  8. To delete a manipulative, simply select and tap delete on your laptop keyboard.

Creating a Polypad Activity

  1. If the activity you are creating requires student input, you will want to click on the page tab and switch to authoring mode. This will allow you to limit the types of manipulatives and tools the students can use.
  2. Toggle on authoring mode and deselect all of the items that you do not want students to access.
    1. Note: You will still have access to these items in authoring mode throughout your activity creation.
  3. Once you are finished building your activity, turn authoring mode off.
  4. Click on the file tab to title and save your polypad.
5. Sharing options (link, embed, etc.) should appear.

Assigning a Polypad

Assigning a Polypad

To embed a Polypad on a Canvas assignment:

  1. Save your Polypad on Mathigon
  2. Click on the "Share" icon
  3. Copy the iframe code that populates
  4. On the Canavs assignment page, select the </> icon below the Rich Content Editor box
  5. Paste the iframe code
  6. Select the </> icon again to view your Polypad activity.
  7. Save and publish the assignment.

Note: To collect data from individual students requires students to create an account. Instead, use polypad activities as a way for students to practice and get instant feedback towards learning a skill.
