Mosque of Cordoba

The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba is the most important monument in the entire Islamic West and one of the most amazing in the world. Our Mosque-Cathedral seems to have been, since ancient times, dedicated to the worship of different divinities. The Great Mosque consists of two different areas, the courtyard or porticoed sahn, where the minaret stands (under the Renaissance tower), the only intervention of Abd al-Rahman III, and the prayer room or haram. The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba was built in the 8th century under the command of Emir Abd ar-Rahman I on the remains of a Visigothic Christian church. The central focus of the mosque is in a shell-shaped prayer niche built in the 10th century. However, the mihrab of the Córdoba Mosque faces south, like that of the Damascus mosque, and not southeast, where Mecca is located. The striped brick and stone arches are supported by 856 granite and marble pillars, from Roman and Visigothic ruins. The sun's rays create impressive plays of light between the pillars and arches. Like all other cathedrals in southern Spain, the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba also has a Patio de los Naranjos. This is the main entrance to the mosque, which was renovated several times throughout its history. From there you can look up to the sky to enjoy the magnificence of the 93-meter-high Torre del Alminar, from the 16th century. The tower preserves inside the remains of the old minaret of the Mosque, incredibly similar to the Sevillian Giralda.

medina azahara

Located in Córdoba, the history of Medina Azahara begins with Abderraman, III, and his decision to build a city on the outskirts of Córdoba, between the years 936 and 976. A city that as a whole will bring together both the administrative and residential tasks of the caliphate . Just seventy years ago there stood a city brimming with life and splendor that, however, was destroyed during the fights that ended the Umayyad dynasty in Al-Andalus. All the buildings in this city are made with a sandstone similar to that used in the mosque of Córdoba. The first point is that it is one of the largest archaeological sites in Spain and one of the most representative of medieval Europe. Furthermore, this palatine city is one of the most original monumental complexes of Andalusian architecture and Islamic art. The second aspect is that what we can see when we visit Medina Azahara is only 10 percent of the extension of the primitive caliphal complex. The Rico Hall, named for the richness of its decoration, stands in a central position within the city and was the place where foreign embassies were received. The city of Medina Azahara was built around the year 936 as a symbol of greatness.
