Un soldato valoroso... Crastino, un anziano centurione, che pur avendo diritto al congedo ha deciso di combattere per restituire l'onore al loro generale e, a se stessi, la libertà.

Il 9 agosto del 48 a.C. si svolge la battaglia più importante della guerra civile e segna la sconfitta definitiva di Pompeo. Pompeo, successivamente, fugirà in Egitto e verrà ucciso a tradimento per volontà del sovrano. Prima della battaglia Cesare recita un discorso incoraggiante ai soldati.
