Connections: Quote from book: “meth’s cheaper than booze and lasts longer. His mom got into meth. People call her the meth queen.” Page 76 Quote from article: She’s been in and out of my life, in and out of prison (jail and drug treatment).” Theme statement: Addiction can lead to corruption of your surroundings. This is another thing when people say ‘addiction leads to problems.’ The 2 quotes chosen were both bringing up drug addiction. Within the book the author focuses on 1 main thing which is meth. In the book there are multiple people who are using meth and Travis was one of them. Travis had gotten influenced by his mom because she was also a meth user, known as the meth queen. In the article I had chosen they were in a similar situation. Their mom was addicted to drugs and alcohol and was in and out of prison. The quote I used was from the book Fire Keeper’s Daughter, by: Angeline Boulley, page 76- Meth’s cheaper than booze and lasts longer. His mom got into meth. People call her the meth queen. The article I used was called Two Butte Kids Tell the Stories of Their Long Struggle with Meth Addiction. The quote I chose from this article was “She’s been in and out of my life, in and out of prison (jail and drug treatment).” How do these 2 stories connect? They both explore the depth of addiction and how everything around those who are addicted can be destroyed. In the novel they talk about multiple people dying which can lead to corruption of one’s mental health. A similar thing happened in the article; due to the addiction her family was slowing breaking. There are also mentions of love in the article which brings me to the fact Travis claimed he was in ‘love.’ His ex-Lily was an on and off kind of relationship and she broke up with him due to his addiction. The meth had caused a lot of problems mentally and in the end, he killed her, then himself. While we know these are heart breaking stories, they can be used to bring awareness to the usage of drugs. There had been a large increase of drugs over the years and need to be stopped. Now, getting your hands onto drugs is quite simple compared to the past in my opinion. The stories we’ve heard are concerning and need immediate attention. This information all comes from my opinion, and all of this comes to a conclusion of ending addiction as soon as possible.

Writer's Style: Angeline Boulley, the author of a famous book called Fire Keepers Daughter. This book has a lot of awards and is famous the thrillers that lay within the book and the indigenous aspect. This author’s writing style is informal. She uses a lot of her first native language in this book. There are also a lot of prayers within the book which most likely means she is well connected to her culture and has a sense of identity. She also mentions the protagonist and starts off everyday with semaa, which is tobbacoo. The style of book she wrote was a thriller. The author had used a colloquial style with a mix of cerebral style. Within the story Daunis is the protagonist and she’s a round character. Her character was developed to be mainly complex. Another tone the author used was a tense tone. Throughout the novel she had been using the tone, but it was tense towards the end. Angeline (the author) didn’t have the events organized as well as they could have been. She had a lot of random events thrown in without an explanation or a sense of purpose which was quite annoying. Quote: I start my day before sunrise, throwing on running clothes and laying a pinch of semaa at the eastern base of a tree, where sunlight will touch the tobacco first. Prayers begin with offering semaa and sharing my spirt name, clan, and where I am from.

Characterization Quote: I tip the basket upside down. Staring at the floor where Dad’s scarf lands. Green like my mother’s eyes. Levi kept it from me. He had it all along. Page #391 The objects I chose were a hockey puck and a scarf. The scarf represents Daunis and the truth behind when she found it in her brother’s closet. Daunis finding the scarf was part of the climax in this story and unlocked a huge secret behind her brother Levi. If Daunis had never searched his closet more of her loved ones could have died. This wasn’t any scarf though, it belonged to her father that had passed, and she claimed the scarf was as green as her mother’s eyes. This scarf also was something Daunis personally was really connected to, yes it was the climax of the story, but it also symbolized her late father which to me was powerful. She had also mentioned the scarf being a jade color which really brought out a vivid image in mind because I personally love jades. And the fact Levi had the audacity to hide the scarf from her knowing she had been searching everywhere for it really upset me. After she found the scarf I think it would have really motivated her into finding the truth and bringing closure to her community. Picture of Daunis:

Levi plays hockey and seems like an ordinary kid, sweet, handsome, athletic your average intelligent guy, but he had a dark secret. He was part of the Meth-X industry and was hiding the meth within the hockey pucks. He also had placed some pucks inside of Daunis’s closet and my first instinct was Levi trying to frame her. With him being a part of the industry, he had wired a lot of money into Daunis’s account. She was wondering how all the money got transferred and where it came from. Little did she know Levi had collected it from the meth industry and put it into her account. Levi has a strong connection to hockey and is known as the “Golden boy” that can’t do anything wrong. He is also the captain on his hockey team. Him playing hockey is most likely how he got the idea of hiding meth within the puck itself along with minor adjustments. With the drugs, he had earned money transferred the money to Daunis’s account though a bank in Panama The discovery of this motivated her for further investigation and the truth behind everything, which soon was brought to light. What I think Levi looks like:

Inquiry into the human condition The inquiry question that I chose is, “Why is it important to take risks?” Taking risks is a part of life, you don’t know when you’ll need to take one, but it can bring a sense of adrenaline and make big impacts. Within this book there was a lot of risk taking involved and new experiences. This novel revealed the importance of taking risk behind the story within this book. How? Lily took a risk by jumping in front of a gun to save Daunis’s life. If it wasn’t for that risk, Daunis wouldn’t have figured out the truth behind Travis, the killer. Due to risk taking Daunis was able to figure out the truth about certain people and was able to uncover the Meth industry. She took a risk by participating in the FBI investigation while having Jamie by her side. She broke into Dana’s house and went through Levi’s room and uncovered the truth behind him, he was apart of the industry and was wiring money into her bank account. All these risks taken all for 1 thing. Justice.
