Introduction

Welcome to our review game! This activity will test your knowledge of terms and practice relevant to main idea. The goal of this game is to collect as many paper slips as possible by answering the questions you draw correctly. For each question you get right, you get to keep the paper! However, if you get a question wrong, you must return it to the box. But be careful-- draw a KABOOM and you lose all papers! This is a competition-- the member with the most papers at the end of the game will receive a prize. You will need resources: the online instructions and box of paper slips. Please ask Ms. Sayer if you need any help. And...

May the odds be ever in your favor

There are many kinds of unusual plants. Cactuses, for instance, can survive in the great heat of the desert sun at noon and in the bitter cold of the desert at night. Instead of regular leaves, they have needles that serve as a defense against hungry animals. Their stems are full of hollow cells that store enough water to last for months. These features make the cactus a remarkable plant, able to live in one of nature’s harshest environments. What is the main idea of this passage?

Egypt’s pyramids are the oldest existing buildings in the world. These ancient tombs are also among the world’s largest structures. The largest pyramid stands taller than a 40story building and covers an area greater than that of ten football fields. More than 80 pyramids still exist, and their oncesmooth limestone surfaces hide secret passageways and rooms. The pyramids of ancient Egypt served a vital purpose: to protect the pharaoh’s bodies after death. Each pyramid held not only the pharaoh’s preserved body, but also all the goods he would need in his life after death.

Which detail is LEAST relevant in supporting the main idea?" Pyramids are structures with several distinctive traits" Explain why.

Learning how to ride a bike is no easy task. Most people learn as children and mount their first bicycle with training wheels mounted on the sides of the back tires. Those training wheels eventually come off. When that happens, usually someone runs behind the bicycle, holding the back of the seat as the rider learns to balance on two wheels. As the runner runs back and forth down the street, the rider eventually picks up on how to lean to stay up on two wheels. Eventually, the runner lets go of the seat, and the rider rides off on his or her own. What is the main idea of this passage?
