1) Description

O 🡪 describe the postcard (how many parts, where, who, when, situation) situating elements – contrast – want divided into 2 parts same place in both parts: on a quay/wharf/dock somewhere in the UK 2 people: a typical Briton (bowler hat, walking his dog – 62% of Britons own a pet among whom 34% a dog, 28% a cat) + a man in the water, asking for help because he is drowning situation: the man in the water is drowning and he is asking for help: he wants the walking man to throw him the life belt which is on the quay in the 1st part on/to the left, he’s shouting for help by saying “help!” but the walking man is passing his way and doesn’t pay attention to him while in the 2nd part on the right, he’s rephrasing his demand very politely by apologising and the walking man is throwing him the life belt the 1st part is labelled “wrong” whereas the 2nd part is labelled “right”

If you’re not polite, British people won’t answer to your request. You must be polite/civil/considerate/diplomatic/respectful in the UK.

There’s a discrepancy/gap between the urgency/urgent situation the man is in and the walking man’s response: he should be reacting immediately but walks past the drowning man The label shows what you should say in an urgent situation but by the time you’re saying all that, you can drown.

The artists are clearly making fun of/laughing at/mocking British politeness but at the same time, they want to show us an important part of British character. They teach foreigners basic rules of good manners in the UK
