Space and Universe

Welcome 6th graders!

A journey soon begin through Social Science experiences!

Space:

Definition: Space, also known as the void, is the three-dimensional region in which all objects and events in the universe exist. Features: The space is not completely empty; It contains subatomic particles and energy fields. It is governed by the laws of physics.

Universe:

Definition: The universe is the totality of existence, including matter, energy, time, and space. Expansion: The universe has been constantly expanding since the Big Bang, an event that occurred approximately 13.8 billion years ago.

Galaxies:

Definition: Galaxies are vast groupings of stars, planets, gas, dust, and dark matter held together by gravity. Types: There are several types of galaxies, such as spirals, ellipticals, and irregulars.

Star:

Definition: Stars are massive celestial bodies that emit light and energy due to nuclear reactions in their cores. Life Cycle: Stars have a life cycle that includes stages such as formation, main sequence, and eventually death.

Solar Systems:

Definition: A solar system is a collection of celestial bodies, including a sun and the planets orbiting around it. Example: Our solar system includes the Sun, planets such as Earth, Mars and Jupiter, and other celestial objects.

Cosmology:

Definition: Cosmology is the branch of astronomy that studies the origin, evolution, and large-scale structure of the universe. Big Bang Theory: The Big Bang theory is the most widely accepted explanation for the origin of the universe, suggesting that it began as a singularity and expanded rapidly.

Dark Matter and Dark Energy:

Dark Matter: A form of matter that does not emit, absorb, or reflect light, but exerts gravitational influence. It makes up most of the mass in the universe. Dark Energy: It is a form of energy that seems to be accelerating the expansion of the universe, but its exact nature is still unknown.

Space Exploration:

Space Missions: Various space agencies, such as NASA and ESA, have conducted missions to explore planets, moons, and other objects in the solar system. International Space Station (ISS): It is an orbiting laboratory that allows research in microgravity conditions.

SC.8.E.5.1 Recognize that there are enormous distances between objects in space and apply our knowledge of light and space travel to understand this distance. SC.8.E.5.2 Recognize that the universe contains many billions of galaxies and that each galaxy contains many billions of stars. SC.8.E.5.3 Distinguish the hierarchical relationships between planets and other astronomical bodies relative to solar system, galaxy, and universe, including distance, size, and composition. SC.8.E.5.4 Explore the Law of Universal Gravitation by explaining the role that gravity plays in the formation of planets, stars, and solar systems and in determining their motions. SC.8.E.5.5 Describe and classify specific physical properties of stars: apparent magnitude (brightness), temperature (color), size, and luminosity (absolute brightness). SC.8.E.5.6 Create models of solar properties including: rotation, structure of the Sun, convection, sunspots, solar flares, and prominences. SC.8.E.5.7 Compare and contrast the properties of objects in the Solar System including the Sun, planets, and moons to those of Earth, such as gravitational force, distance from the Sun, speed, movement, temperature, and atmospheric conditions. SC.8.E.5.8 Compare various historical models of the Solar System, including geocentric and heliocentric. SC.8.E.5.9 Explain the impact of objects in space on each other including: 1. the Sun on the Earth including seasons and gravitational attraction 2. the Moon on the Earth, including phases, tides, and eclipses, and the relative position of each body. SC.8.E.5.10 Assess how technology is essential to science for such purposes as access to outer space and other remote locations, sample collection, measurement, data collection and storage, computation, and communication of information. SC.8.E.5.11 Identify and compare characteristics of the electromagnetic spectrum such as wavelength, frequency, use, and hazards and recognize its application to an understanding of planetary images and satellite photographs. SC.8.E.5.12 Summarize the effects of space exploration on the economy and culture of Florida.
