THE WAR OF SUCCESSION
The Hapsburgs
Carlos I was the first Habsburg king, crowned in 1516 and inherited a great empire from the Catholic Monarchs, fighting during his reign in many wars to protect their Spanish territories, also from Italy, from central Europe and also from North Africa. His son Felipe II expanded the possessions in America and added African lands, Philippine, Indies to the empire. With the Lessers Hapsburgs (Felipe III, Felipe IV and Carlos II) Spain lost many lands and when Carlos II died in 1700 without heirs the Habsburg dynasty ended.
