Introduction to the course

In this session you will consider what you know already and learn more about problem solving and critical thinking. Then you will have a brief introduction to coding in Replit and will write your first computer program of the course.

In this module you will define what a computer is by looking at examples of general purpose and embedded systems. You will recognise the components of a standard computer and consider input and output devices. You’ll understand what software and hardware is and be able to categorise the different types of software. You will also learn the difference between the world wide web and the Internet. You’ll learn about the CPU and the different types of memory in a computer and consider what happens when we first turn on a computer. You’ll examine performance metrics of certain components and how this affects the computer’s overall performance. Finally you will learn how to troubleshoot technical issues and briefly touch on the advantages and disadvantages of cloud computing.

The IT support role - 1

IIn this module you will gain an understanding of the IT support role. In preparation for working in IT you will also learn about the importance of cybersecurity and how it is everyone’s responsibility. You will also be able to recognise typical IT support calls. Lastly, you will understand the SFIA. The SFIA is a globally-recognised standard, developed by industry experts and backed by Government as best practice for identifying and developing IT capability.

IIn this module you will look at the tools used by IT support professionals including ticketing systems, troubleshooting and diagnostics. You will also apply the concepts of problem solving and critical thinking to IT support scenarios and consider the importance of customer relationship management.

In this module you are introduced to the types of testing employed in system development. You will also consider the other responsibilities which are typical of an IT support professional including training of other colleagues.

In this module you go beyond the support role to consider how teams work in IT departments, specifically through the employment of methodologies such as devops/agile and the importance of QA. In addition you will reflect on the IT profession and understand the importance of accessibility, inclusion and diversity in digital roles. Lastly you will learn some useful business techniques for managing your time and making well-considered decisions.

Introduction to coding and software development - 1

In this module you will explore what a computer program is and consider the four cornerstones of computational thinking. You will learn how to use flowcharts to express algorithms via that medium. Lastly you will learn about the basic programming constructs and return to Replit to write some simple programs using sequence.

Introduction to coding and software development - 2

In this module you will review what you learned in the previous module, in terms of computational thinking and programming constructs and apply this knowledge to debugging and code reading. You will learn about data types and will take your programming further by experiencing programs which also use selection and iteration. Lastly, you are introduced to the concept of source control and will understand its significance to the IT industry.

Career Path 1 - User design/ research

In this module you will consider the importance of user design and research. You will start by understanding what the term user experience (UX) means then examine the concept of stakeholder research. You will experience analysing existing websites from the user experience perspective. You will learn about the importance of designing for ED&I and learn how to apply the design principles and stakeholder research to specific scenarios.

Career Path 2 - Digital marketing & website design

During this module you will be introduced to the concept of digital marketing. You will realise how ubiquitous digital marketing techniques are and learn about the difference between SEO and SEM. You will look at some of the tools used by digital marketing professionals to analyse performance and plan strategy. You will understand the RACE framework for digital marketing strategy and use this knowledge to create your own social media posts and basic website.

Career Path 3 - Data analysis

In this module you are introduced to the role of data analyst. You will understand the importance of the data analytics lifecycle and experience basic priorities and methods for cleaning data. You will be exposed to a number of examples of data visualisation and will use spreadsheets to learn how to tell a story with data.

Course review

In this final module of the course you will review what you have learned and created during the course. You will also complete a multiple choice final assessment, reviewing what you have learned throughout the course. In addition we will share some information about qualities of an IT professional and the opportunities presented by lifelong learning.
