ILAN-ES
Help the astronaut complete the experiment!
START
ILAN-ES
In April 2022, four astronauts were launched to the International Space Station as part of the AX1 mission, the first private mission to the space station! The second Israeli astronaut Eitan Stibbe who participated in the mission, photographed lightning flashes from the space station as part of the research led by Professor Yoav Yair from Reichman University. The experiment included observations from space of lightning sprites and other atmospheric electricity phenomena in collaboration with ground stations around the world. In this activity you will explore life on the space station, about lightning storms and lightning sprites, as well as about photographing them from space!
NEXT
Now it's your Turn!
In order to participate in the experiment and photograph interesting phenomena from space, the astronaut needs to get to know the ILAN-ES experiment and understand the different parts of it. How do you come into the picture? Help the astronaut finish all the tasks to carry out the experiment

Just before returning to Earth - meet the cupola!
The cupola is a device in the Space Station, surrounded by seven panoramic windows, from which it is possible to peer out toward the view outside the Station. The view from the cupola also helps astronauts photograph the Earth and various phenomena
After researching the ISS, answer the questions correctly to move on to the next mission!

THE ISS
The ISS is a manned, artificial satellite, which orbits Earth in a low satellite orbit, where it is used as a research station. The Station was built through cooperation between five space agencies. This construction is considered one of the most high-cost international projects. The Station orbits Earth at 28,000 km per hour and completes one orbit every 90 minutes. This orbit speed enables the astronauts to observe 16 sunrises and sunsets every day!
Without the atmosphere we would not be able to live on Earth! Click on the correct answer and find out why
Ready for launch?
Most launches to the Space Station nowadays are done by the Falcon launch vehicle and the Dragon spacecraft built by SpaceX. The Falcon 9 rocket is a reusable launcher - it is intended to launch into orbit, to release its payload (the spacecraft) and then to make a safe precision landing back on Earth! Dragon is also a reusable cargo spacecraft. The spacecraft is launched on the Falcon 9 launch vehicle into a low satellite orbit. When it reaches the proper location, the spacecraft disengages from the launch vehicle and fires its own engines to continue toward the Space Station.

James Webb and Hubble
Have you heard about the James Webb Space Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope? Astronauts also photograph things from space, but not only! Over the years we have sent telescopes into space to explore our universe.
TLE's
Large-scale thunderstorms can cause various kinds of electric phenomena, referred to as TLEs=Transient Luminous Events. These events occur high in the atmosphere, above the electric storms and above the storm clouds. Not every lightning bolt is able to generate these phenomena - only the exceptionally-powerful bolts can do this - positive lightning. During the discharge of a positive lightning to the ground, a powerful electric field forms above the cloud, which accelerates electrons causing them to collide with air molecules such as nitrogen and oxygen. This collision excites and ionizes nitrogen molecules. This process creates red and blue flashes of light, which take on various forms - these are referred to as sprites and elves.
Our Atmosphere
שכבות האטמוספרה
The Earth’s atmosphere is a layer of gas attracted to our planet thanks to the planet’s gravitational pull. The atmosphere enables the existence of life on Earth by absorbing most of the radiation reaching us from the sun. It also maintains a life-supporting temperature on Earth. The atmosphere consists of nitrogen (78%), Oxygen (21%) and other gases (argon, carbon dioxide, water vapor and others).
Welcome to the ISS
The Space Station is 100 meters by 35 meters approximately. The Station has six bedrooms, two bathrooms, a greenhouse, a kitchenette with a microwave and cooking oven, a gym and dozens of instruments for carrying out scientific measurements. The Station has engines of its own, enabling it to make orbit corrections when necessary.

Who is in space?
The space station is always manned and never left alone. Who is at the station now?
What is the green house effect?
שכבות האטמוספרה
This is a process in which heat gets trapped within the Earth’s atmosphere due to the presence of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which prevent the heat from ‘escaping’ - like the glass walls in a greenhouse. Increased greenhouse gas emissions due to human activity has accelerated the greenhouse effect in recent years, resulting in a host of climate events here on Earth, collectively referred to as the ‘climate crisis’.
Microgravity
Why do astronauts appear to be floating in space?
At any given time, the Station is in a state known as “free fall”. Yes, just like one of those amusement park devices that drops you toward the ground, only from much higher up! (about 400 km above us).
In fact, one can say that the Space Station is constantly falling toward Earth, but is continually missing it. This fall creates a sensation of weightlessness inside the Station, enabling study of the way all sorts of materials and processes behave under conditions of microgravity.
Is it possible to feel microgravity conditions on Earth?
What is the importance of the study of TLE's to the study of global warming?
