1. What was Prohibition? From 1920 to 1933, it was illegal to sell or produce alcohol in America. It was Prohibition then. To support the new rules, in the early 1900s, the “temperance” movement was created: it was meant to stop people from drinking alcohol. At that time, people thought it destroyed families and was the source of moral corruption. During the World War I, President Woodrow Wilson decided to end the production of alcoholic drinks because America needed its grain to make food. His decision gave way to the Temperance movement. The 18th Amendment was ratified on January 29th, 1919 and alcoholic drinks became illegal in the United States.
