The origin of Igwe dance
The Igwe dance originated from the Igbo people of Nnewi, in Anambra State, Nigeria. It is performed during the Afiaolu festival, also known as the New Yam festival which is a traditional festival held annually. The festival revolves around drama and rituals, especially religious ones, and is observed in honor of Ufiojiokwu, the deity of land fertility. The dance is a significant part of this cultural heritage and tradition.
