SHAKESPEARE
William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an English poet, playwright, and actor. There is no record of his birth. His father was a glove maker , a successful local businessman, and his mother was the daughter of a landowner. Shakespeare was educated at the local grammar school, from the age of 7 to 13. When he was 18 he married Anne Hathaway, eight years older than him, and they had 3 children. After his marriage he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men.

There were no women in these companies because the acting profession was considered immoral and, therefore, inappropriate for a woman. So, young boys played women’s roles in the plays.
