Enhancing Cultural Responsiveness: Literature
Find books and authors that are culturally relevant to your class. You can still meet grade level standards with texts more personal for your class. Suggestion: Check in with your school library for books on subjects of interest or relation to your class. Introduce them to new authors each month if you can.
Enhancing Cultural Responsiveness: Bilingual Books
Finding bilingual books helps students with language acquisition. Books are great ways from students read at their own pace. Having a translation and visuals on the page helps English Language Learners.
"Bilingual picture books offer children the opportunity to develop a second language and expand their cultural awareness" (Taylor, nd).
Enhancing Cultural Responsiveness: Cultural Integration
For Red Ribbon Week, I had my 5th graders make a poster with little figures that represented a culture from around the world. Students drew the characters correctly and had the students say "no" in the corresponding language. Activities like this that incorporate and expose students to multiple cultures creates an inclusive classroom.
Technology that will help your students be and feel more engaged
Utilizing Google Translate is an easy culturally responsive strategy that bridges the language gap. Demonstrate to students how to use the application. But more importantly have students become familiar with using the feature on their own.
"Technology tools such as Google Translate can help students who do not speak English, or need assistance with some translation, especially when delving into more advanced topics" (WCET, 2023).

Technology that will help your students be and feel more engaged
There are many different learning styles, but we are going to be focusing on the four sensory styles: visual, aural, verbal [reading/writing], and kinesthetic (Chick, 2010). By adding a video before, after, or during your instruction, students with visual learning styles can better understand and better absorb the information. The video visual is a great way to show students exactly what the text means. Another way to draw students in, is by finding vidoes that represent the demographic of your classroom. Seeing people or places they relate to allows students to connect with the lesson.

Technology for Culturally Responsive Support: subtitles
A simple yet effective way to make your lessons more accessible for students is to add subtitles to youtube videos. The benefits to adding subtitles:
- will help students with auditory issues
- can be translated for language learners
- will make the video more comprehensible

Technology for Culturally Responsive Support: Pear Deck
Pear Deck add on in Google SlidesPear Deck is a great extension to add to google slides to make the lesson interactive. This add on lets students see the slide directly on their device. This helps students with:
- visual needs because the slide is right in front of them instead of on the screen (no need to peer over someone's head
- interact with the lesson using text, drawing, highlighting etc.
- Zoom in to make the text larger
- Shy students can respond here

Culturally Responsive Instructional Strategies: relatable texts
Suggestion: find texts written by authors of similar backgrounds to your students. Find texts that show students like the ones you have so they can relate and connect with the text. Moreover, students need to be exposed to reading and listening to stories about individuals that share similar stories (Bonner, Goings, Robinson, 2019).
Culturally Responsive Instructional Strategies: students in the curriculum
The best way for students to connect with their students is to connect with their students. In the beginning of the year, take time to get to know your students. Find out about their family, cultural background, experiences. Then try to incorporate parts of them in your curriculum. For example: in math, I start the year off by having students share how many people are in their family. We compare family sizes and find out which place in the family line everyone lands. We then learn about fractions and write our family in fractions: 1 (yourself) ex: 3 (size of family)
