1. Verb Patter with meaning change

After the following verbs:

  • Remember
  • Foget
  • Stop
  • Try
We can use both the -ing form and the to infinitive. However the meaning of the sentences change

  • arrange to
  • can't afford to
  • decide to
  • Intend to
  • learn to
  • manage to
  • offer to
  • prefer to
  • refuse to
  • seem to

I decide to leave school to find a job He offered to do the job. I learnt to cook. I refused to go to the party and I stayed at home.

With verbs such as make or let:

  • You make me feel wonderful
  • Let me be your heroe.

With verbs such as advise, allow, cause, enable, encourage, expect, force, remind, urge, warm:

  • Patrick's dad encouraged him to study law.
  • We expect him to come to the party
  • Her teacher advised her to do the exam.

After verbs such as: begin, continue, hate, intend, like, love, prefer, start, we use both the -ing form and the to + infinitive form. The meaning stays the same or changes very slightly:

  • I began playing paddle. I began to play paddle.
  • He intends using the school website. He inteds to use the school website.

5. Verbs + ing form

Verbs such as admit, avoid, can't help, can't stand, enjoy, fancy, imagine, keep, miss, practive, spend, waste time I can't stand wearing school uniform I fancy listening this kind of music She recently stopped eating fast food, and she feels better already.
