Affirmative Negative Interrogative

  • There is an apple.
  • There isn't an apple.
  • Is there an apple?
  • There are some apples.
  • There aren't any apples.
  • Are there any apples?

Use of “a” / “an”, “some” and “any”

• We use a or an to talk about singular nouns we can count. e.g. a stone, an apple.

• We use some for plural nouns we can count. e.g. some seeds, some cherries.

• We also use some for nouns we can’t count and which haven’t got plural forms. e.g. some food, some fruit, some smoke.

• We use any in negative sentences and questions.
