CHRISTMAS IN SPAIN

Christmas time in Spain is from the 24th of December to the 6th of January. We call it "Navidad". During this time of the year, everyone strives to fill their days with happiness, joy, and family harmoney, although some are more successful that others.

NATIVITY SCENE

One Christmas tradition in Spain is to set the nativity scene to decorate our houses and feel the Christmas’ spirit. The nativity scene it represents the birth of Jesus Christ. The tradition consists on taking some ceramic figures (virgin Mary, Sant Josep, Jesus Christ, an angel, the Donkey and Ox) and set them into a cave to represent the birth of Jesus Christ. The 3 wise men bring to Jesus, gold, insence and myrrh.

NOCHEBUENA

At Christmas Eve, 24th of December, is the Christian celebration of Jesus Christ birth. Traditionally, in Spain, families meet that night to have dinner with those we love. We decorate and set the tables as in the picture. On Christmas Eve, we normally eat some sea food and prawns, meat and Christmas sweets called “Turrón”.

NOCHEVIEJA

At midnight of New Year's Eve, the 12 strikes of the bells mark the end of the year and the beginning of the next one. At that time, we eat 12 grapes, one by one at the pace of the 12 strikes.

JANUARY 6TH

In Spain, Santa Claus isn't the star of Christmas when the holiday season rolls around. Instead, it's the Three Wise Men (Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar) who take center stage during the winter holidays. They're the ones who bring Spanish children their gifts the night before Three Kings Day on January 6. On January 5th, there are parades throughout all the country.
