Son of Jean Charles Bartholdi (1791-1836), prefectural councilor,and augusta Charlotte,born Beysser (1801-1891), daugher of a mayer of Ribeuville. of his 4 childrens, only the eldest,Jean Charles and the youngest,Auguste, survived.

He was born in colmar on agust 2, in 1834 and he died in paris 4 on october,1904 from tuberculosis .
after premature death of his father,he decided to go live in paris.

his life
During the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, he was squadron leader of the national guards and acted as dean of General Giuseppe Garibaldi and liaison of the goverment, particulary in charge of taking care of the needs of the vosges army.
his studies at the Lycee louis-grand in Paris, he obtained his baccalaurate in 1852. he then studied architecture at the Ecole Nationale Supervire des Beau-Arts, under the direction of Ary Scheffer in his studio on Chaptal Street.

In 1871, at the request of Eduardo Laboulaye and United States, to be able to select in person the place where the famous statue of liberty will be installed.

HE ADQUIRED WORLD FAME FOR DESISNING OR SCULPTING THE Statue of liberty in new york.bartholdi designed the statue together with gustavo eiffel and it took him 10 years to build it. the statue,in addition to being an important monument of new york city,became a symbol of the united states and emancipation.
