Introduction

the Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake is an annual event held in the district of Gloucester ( England , United Kingdom ) every last Monday in May. It is a race where competitors must catch a Gloucester cheese thrown from a sloping hill of about 182 meters, which results in falls due to the speed it can reach.

01

Origin of Sport

Originally it is a local festival in Brockworth , a small town in the county of Gloucestershire , over time it has gained international fame and today has thousands of visitors. The event became famous throughout the 20th century , first among the British themselves and then internationally, for the falls caused when trying to catch the cheese. In the 1993 edition there were even four serious injuries during the races, but over time a regulation and competition calendar have been standardized to prevent damage.

02

Where is it played?

On a hill located in the village of Brockworth, near Gloucester, 40 minutes from Oxford (England).

03

Necessary Equipment

Common, comfortable clothing is worn with a t-shirt designed for each team. The lack of equipment is what has caused many accidents.

04

Rules and Number of players

From the top of Cooper's Hill in the town of Brockworth , a master of ceremonies throws a four-kilogram Double Gloucester cheese down the slope. The competitors must go down the hill to catch it, and the first to do so is declared the winner. There are different categories according to age and gender, Because the slope is too steep, the cheese can reach speeds of over 100 kilometers per hour. In addition, there are usually falls, injuries and accidents among participants. In 2013 the cheese was replaced by a polystyrene replica to avoid injuries among spectators, but due to criticism this measure was scrapped the following year.
