Harpist's massacre (1571-1607)
The harp, still an Irish symbol nowadays
- since a long time, harpists are high in the Irish society, they represent Ireland by their famous instrument
- Queen Elizabeth decided in 1571 to "hang the harpers and burn their instruments"
- She also created in 1607 the "Flight of the Earls" to destroy a massive symbol of Irish culture

The Irish Potato Famine (1845-1852): a fungus destroyed the plantations and caused numerous deaths due to starvation and disease (almost 2 million). The number of Irish who emigrated to the United States during the famine may have reached 2 million.
