The Pannathenaic festival was THE festival of Athens. Learn more about it by watching this short video.

Pythia, the high priestess

Delphi

Delphi was an ancient sacred centre. Believed to be the center of the world, it was the home of the oracle, Pythia, the high priestess of the temple of Apollo at Delphi. Delphi took its name from the Delphyne, the female serpent who lived there and was killed by the god Apollo.

Land of The Ancient Oracle

Olympia

Ancient Olympia was an ancient Greek sanctuary site dedicated to the worship of Zeus located in the western Peloponnese. The Pan-Hellenic Olympic Games were held at the site in honour of Zeus every four years from 776 BCE to 393 CE.

Thebes

In mythology the city was founded by Kadmos, son of Agenor, brother of Europa, and ancestor of Oedipus. After killing a giant serpent (or dragon) which Ares had sent to protect the Areia Spring, Athena instructed Kadmos to sow the serpent's teeth into the ground from which sprang up warriors who would found the city of Thebes.

Can you answer the riddle?

Thebes was, according to legend, the birthplace of the mythological pan-Hellenic hero Hercules. It was also the place where the Sphinx - a mythical creature with a woman's head and a winged lion's body - appeared to terrorize the area until her riddle was solved. Her riddle asked passersby to identify the creature that may have two, three, or four feet, can move in air, water, and on land, and moves more slowly the more feet it has.

The Palace of Knossos at Crete

The minotaur was a bull-headed monster born to Queen Pasiphae of Krete (Crete) after she coupled with a bull. The creature resided in the twisting maze of the labyrinth where it was offfered a regular sacrifice of Athenian youths and maidens to satisfy its cannibalistic hunger. The beast was eventually slain by the hero Theseus. The Minotauros' proper name Asterion, "the starry one," suggests he might have been associated with the constellation Tauros.
Crete is an island in the eastern Mediterranean which during the Bronze Age produced the influential Minoan civilization with its distinctive architecture and art. The Minoan palaces show evidence of destruction by earthquake c. 1700 BCE, after which they were rebuilt.
