Test your food for starch
Biology Experiments
Starchy foods contain lots of energy in the form of carbohydrates
How do I know if a food is starchy or not?
There is a simple chemical test you can do to find out!
Ingredients
- Iodine
- Corn Starch
- Water
- 1/4 Teaspoon
- Cutting Board
- Knife
- Sheet of aluminum foil
- Pipette medicine dropper
- Safety glasses
- A variety of foods to test
- Optional: Apron
Fill two cups half full of room-temparature water.
Label one "+" and one "–"
Add 1/4 teaspoon of corn starch to the "+" cup and mix
Wear eye protection when using the iodine solution.
Note that iodine can stain clothes and workspace,so either protect them or do your best to avoid any spills!
Add a couple of drops of idodine solution to the water.
Add a couple of drops of idodine solution to the corn starch solution
Cut off a small piece of food that you want to test.
Place the pieces of food next to each other on the aluminum foil
Carefully place the first drop of idodine solution on the first food.
Repeat with all the foods
