THE elizabethan theatre

The most famous Elizabethan theatre was the Globe Theatre in London which opened in 1599. The Globe showed many of William Shakespeare's plays such as 'Romeo and Juliet'. It was or octagonal in shape, and it could hold up to three thousand people. The stage had no curtain and it was known as 'apron stage', was rectangular and around twelve actors to appear at a time. It was supported by two pillars and had a roof to protect actors and costumes. There was an upper stage, hidden by a curtain, and an upper area normally used by musicians. In the front part of the stage, there was a trap door used for apparitions. A tiring house where the actors changed their clothes, the pit where the poorer spectators watch the play, sorrounded by three tiers, of roofed galleries where the wealthier spectators paid to sit. The performances took place in the afternoon because there was limited artificial lights, there was little or no scenary and there was also a limited number of props. The actors was a busy man and no actress, the part of young women were performed by boys.

Shall i compare thee

Shall I compare thee is a collection of sonnets written by William Shakespeare, it is addressed to a young man, known as the 'Fair Youth', it discusses the nature of physical beauty and its relationship to poetry. The sonnet is different from Petrarca's sonnet because this is divided in 3 quatrin of iambic pentameters rhyming couplet and in 14 lines. The poet initially compare his friend to a summer day which he will affirm that will be much more beautiful and eternal, in fact he wants to immortalize him through poetry which will take him away from death and will always give him life.

Romeo and juliet

Romeo and Juliet is one of the most important dramas of William Shakespeare, it introduces the feud between the Montague and Capulet families and anticipates the main themes of the play.
