Shepherd's Pie!
English Oral Presentation
Let's go!
Are there any variations?
What is shepherd's pie?
Origins
Yes! There are many variations of the recipe, including those that use beef instead of lamb, or that add additional ingredients such as Worcestershire sauce, cheese, or beer.
It is a savoury dish of cooked minced meat topped with mashed potatoes.
The dish is believed to have originated in the late 1700s as a way to use up leftover meat and vegetables.

Step by step:
- Heat 1 tbsp of sunflower oil in a medium pan, then soften 1 chopped* onion and 2-3 chopped carrots for a few minutes.
- When soft, turn up the heat, crumble* 500g minced lamb meat until it's brown, tipping off any excess fat.
Then you should:
3. Add 2 tbsp of tomato purée and a large splash of Worcestershire sauce, then fry for a few minutes. 4. Pour over 500ml of beef stock, bring to a simmer, then cover and cook for 40 minutes. 5. Meanwhile, heat the oven to 180 ºC. Boil the 900g of potato, already cut into chunks, in salted water for 10-15 mins until tender. 6. Add 85g of butter and 3 tbsp milk to the mashed potatoes.
Followed by:
7. Put the meat into a ovenproof dish, top with the potatoes and ruffle with a fork. The pie can now be chilled and frozen for up to a month. 8. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the top is starting to colour. 9. Leave to stand for 5 minutes before serving.
