Choice Boards

Differentiation

Think of a choice board as a learning menu. Students get to pick how they obtain the information presented or how they showcase their learning. Our focus will be on learning using choice boards.

Definition: learning experiences in which the approach or method of learning is adjusted to meet the needs of individual students, focusing on the ‘how’ of personalized learning.- Richard Culatta

Digital Choice Board
  • Offers multiple modes of learning through digital media (audio, video, etc.)
  • 2 or more choices
  • Can blend online activities with offline.

Best Practices

Choice Boards in Action
Choice Board Creation
  • Set clear expectations for
    • behavior
    • independent/partner/group
  • Model how to use the choice board
  • Be flexible
    • If a student wants to switch their choice, let them if time allows
  • Use time wisely
    • conference with students
  • Provide feedback
  • Keep aligned to learning target
  • Offer a range of different activities
  • Provide clear instructions
  • Keep time balanced
  • Clearly state deadlines for completion.
  • Add a form of assessment and explain how students will be assessed
  • Provide opportunity for reflection.
Why Choice Boards?

Not every student learns in the exact same way or is at the exact same readiness level. Having content represented in different ways can lessen frustration students feel with a one-size-fits-all model. Choice Boards offer teachers and students multiple benefits

  • Empower students to take ownership (ISTE 2.6a)
  • Accommodate learner variability (ISTE 2.5a)
  • Increased engagement that supports learning (ISTE 2.5c)
