Mandela's activism led to his arrest in 1962. In 1964, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in planning sabotage against the apartheid government. rUGBY IN SOUTH AFRICA
Mandela believed in the values of democracy, but he also believed in sporting values. He believed sport to be very important for social cohesion.
He decided to rebuild the unity of his country by spreading the values of sport. Rugby was hated by blacks who considered it to be a sport only for whites. Mandela realized that whites sport, which was then South Africa's wealthy and cultured minority, could not be abolished, but had to be destined to become the sport all across the country. So he took the opportunity of the World Cup held in South Africa in 1995 and he promoted a happening that was not simply sport but also a political event.
Importance of Sport
Sport is an important social activity that is able to abolish social and cultural distances because offers a common goal that everybody aim to achieve. During a sport competition either the players and the followers discover feelings of common participation, unity and even brotherhood. Furthermore sport is a great symbol of fair play and loyalty.
