Characteristics of friendship

Benefits of social networks

Social networks have multiple benefits for our cognitive and social development. One of the advantages is connectivity, as we can connect with anyone in the world to share thoughts, ideas, opinions and feelings. In addition, social networks are useful for education, both for students and teachers.

Benefits of friendship

Friends provide emotional support and motivation to learn, which reduces depression, anxiety and loneliness, as well as the negative effect of rejection, victimization and bullying. In addition, friendship provides a context for social, emotional and cognitive development, and is presented as an environment of equal social power, different from relationships with parents or teachers.

So-called digital natives, students who have grown up in a digital world, need creative and innovative engagement in learning. Traditional teaching methods must be replaced by highly interactive strategies that develop 21st century skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration and assertive communication.

Dangers of friendship

During adolescence, between the ages of 12 and 17, friendships can be more complicated because children struggle to maintain relationships with peers who change in many ways and peer pressure can be a problem. Children and adolescents need to choose friends who will positively influence them.

Friendship and horizontal relationships

Friendship and horizontal relationships are fundamental for child and adolescent development. This is defined as the strong, positive, affective bonds that exist between two people and that aim to facilitate the achievement of socioemotional goals.
