Clinical Ladder Program
What is a clinical ladder program?
- A clinical ladder is a structured system to provide nurses with career advancement while remaining in their current clinical setting, providing direct patient care. It is used to recognize professional development and differentiate between different levels of nursing care and expertise.
- The purpose is to recognize and incentivize these staff members who are developing their profession.
- Pros of clinical ladder programs:
- Higher quality patient care via higher education.
- Nurse retention and decreased turnover rates.
- Enhances nursing job satisfaction.
- Sense of empowerment and leadership.
- The typical goal for a hospital's clinical ladder program is 40% enrollment.
Clinical Ladder Program
Health Carousel's Clinical Ladder Program
- The Health Carousel Clinical Ladder Program (part of Careers Not Contracts) is a voluntary, hospital-inspired program for travel nurses to grow their careers, just like a clinical ladder for staff nurses.
- It is designed to provide access to certain resources intended to further the career growth and professional development of eligible RNs.
- Through the Clinical Ladder Program, RNs may be eligible to receive benefits such as:
- Certificates of advancement
- Tier completion bonuses
- Reimbursement for membership fees to nurses' associations and organizations.
- Social media and website recognition based on their level in the program.

Eligibility
- To be eligible to participate in the Clinical Ladder Program, a nurse must:
- Have worked a total of 26 weeks on assignment with HCTN and have signed a confirmation letter for their next assignment.
- Hold a position within HCTN that involves providing direct patient care.
- Have the title of "Staff Nurse".
- Retain an unencumbered nursing license.
- Remain in good standing with the Client facility and HCTN.
- Remain actively involved and engaged in the Clinical Ladder online platform.
- There is a one-time grandfather policy where nurses currently working with us who have already met the program eligibility requirements will be placed at Clinical Nurse Level One.
Clinical Ladder Program
Eligibility Cont'd
- Once enrolled in the Clinical Ladder Program, if an RN elects to take a break between assignments that results in the RN no longer being employed by HCTN (generally, a break between assignments of more than 28 days), the Clinical Ladder Program will be “paused” as it relates to that RN.
- If the RN returns to HCTN and meets the eligibility criteria, the RN will be eligible for re-enrollment into the Clinical Ladder Program at the level in which they were enrolled at the time their employment ended.
- The RN will then be required to complete all requirements of that level to be eligible for advancement to the next level.
- If an RN elects to take a break between assignments for six (6) or more consecutive months, the RN will not be eligible to apply weeks previously worked for HCTN for the purpose of advancement through levels. They must complete all requirements in that level to advance to the next level.
Clinical Ladder Program
Enrollment
- Nurses who meet the eligibility requirements for the Clinical Nurse 1 tier will receive an email inviting them to enroll in the Clinical Ladder Program. All RNs must begin at the Clinical Nurse 1 tier, regardless of whether the RN has already satisfied the requirements of the Clinical Nurse 1 tier or other tiers. RNs who become eligible to participate in the Clinical Ladder Program will receive an enrollment invitation email when they become eligible to enroll.
- The enrollment invitation email will contain details regarding how the RN may enroll in the Clinical Ladder Program should they choose to do so.

The Details
Clinical Ladder Program
Why offer it?
- As part of our Careers Not Contracts offering, we believe in supporting our HCPs in their professional development. Most HCPs are familiar with a clinical ladder program in the context of a staff role, but we are the first agencies to offer this growth opportunity for travelers.
- This unique program allows them all the freedom and flexibility of travel contracts while still working on their long-term career goals.
- We believe that our Careers strategy, our Careers message, and our Careers programs are true differentiators in the market.
- Our goal is to increase retention and build nurse tenure. This is not a loyalty program and should not be sold as a bonus program.
- Our goal is to enroll 50% of our HCPs in 2024. However, this program may not be for everyone!

Clinical Ladder Program
FAQs
- How will the nurse track their progress in the program?
- The Clinical Ladder Program is managed through our online digital platform, StaffGarden Grow. This tool will guide them through the steps and requirements at each level. Our program administrator, Grace Cepluch, will monitor activity and be there to guide the RNs through the process.
- Will the hospital recognize the title change for the nurse?
- The title change will occur in ADP and show up on the nurse’s paycheck. While titles don’t transfer from one hospital to another because of differences in clinical ladder programs, we encourage you and our account management teams to use this as a resume builder for the nurse and work the title/experience as an advantage when submitting to jobs.
- Do any of the Clinical Ladder bonuses or perks come out of the pay rate?
- No.
- Once the RN has reached Clinical Nurse 4, do we provide the Clin4 benefits every year they keep working?
- After being promoted to Clinical Nurse 4, a nurse must reapply and continue to meet all requirements annually to continue to receive the benefits.
- How can I find out what level my nurse is and when they are getting promoted?
- There will be a Program Type field in Merlin that will indicate the nurse’s level in Clinical Ladder. A report will be posted to the Clinical Ladder HC Connect page that includes nurses who are nearing eligibility and will show their most current clinical ladder status.
- Who do I contact if I have questions about Clinical Ladder?
