Die "rechtsprechende" Gewalt. Das jeweils oberste Gericht auf nationaler Ebene ist zuständig für die Auslegung der Gesetze und den "Schutz der Verfassung". Im Regelfall können Gerichte nicht selbstständig tätig werden, sondern andere Institutionen/Personen müssen Klage erheben. In den USA ist das oberste Gericht der Supreme Court, in Deutschland ist es das Bundesverfassungsgericht.

Die "gesetzgebende" Gewalt. Sie besteht aus dem Parlament bzw. den Kammern des Parlaments. In den USA sind dies zwei Kammern, der Senat und das Repräsentantenhaus. Zusammen bilden sie den "Congress". In Deutschland haben wir ebenfalls zwei Kammern: Den Bundestag (gewähltes Parlament) und den Bundesrat (Vertretung der Bundesländer).

Die "ausführende" Gewalt. In den USA ist das auf der nationalen Ebene der Präsident und die Regierung, in Deutschland der Bundeskanzler und die Regierung. Dazu gehören allerdings auch alle nachgeordneten Verwaltungen und Behörden (inklusive z.B. der Polizei). Auf Landesebene in Deutschland ist die Landesregierung mit dem Ministerpräsidenten an der Spitze die Exekutive. In den USA wären das die Gouverneure.
