Formation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), consisting of six founding members. The European Union witnessed its largest single expansion to date as ten new member states joined the union. This enlargement represented the inclusion of several Eastern and Central European countries, which had previously been part of the Soviet bloc. The accession of these ten countries, including Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and others, not only expanded the geographical reach of the EU but also brought about an increase in the overall population of the union.
