FOOD

WASTE

Fabián Miranda Muñoz

Objective

DISCUSS HOW MUCH FOOD IS WASTED, THE REASONING OR EXPLANATION BEHIND IT AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS.

The truth is that noBecause the estimates of food waste in fast food restaurants can vary, and data may change over time. Food waste in the food service industry, including fast food establishments, is influenced by factors such as portion sizes, customer preferences, and management practices. But we can get a slight idea.

first!

Do we have any idea how much food is wasted in fast food restaurants?

01

McDonald's

HOW MUCH FOOD DOES MCDONALD´S WASTE?

McDonald's produces 75 hamburgers per second worldwide. That's 6.5 million per day. However, 5% of waste each day is generated from discarded food. Every day 200,000 hamburgers are thrown away around the world at the end of the day because of the experience of eating fresh food. With 47 million people eating at McDonald's every day, it produces the largest amount of waste in the fast food industry, with more than 90,000 tons of food waste per year. Of course, McDonald's tries hard to recycle at least 20% of its waste and wants to divert the remaining waste to energy recovery facilities instead of the landfill, this is to achieve a balance with the immense amount of waste that is generated.

02

Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC)

HOW MUCH FOOD DOES KFC WASTE?

Kentucky Fried Chicken or KFC, an American fast food chain specializing in fried chicken, which has more than 60 establishments in the Netherlands. It seems that a KFC worker named Jeroen, contacted the newspaper concerned about what he was seeing, explained that every day, in the establishment where he worked.Six bags of fried chicken were thrown away every hour, which caused will fill a garbage container.

Ready-to-eat chicken can be stored for a maximum of 90 minutes. After this time it is no longer marketed because it is considered “stale food” and is not fresh enough to be served to customers.

If what this Jeroen says is true, we can imagine how many chickens are being sacrificed in vain, the loss of resources, time, energy and money that occurs, it can be said that chickens are being produced so that they end up directly in the trash.

Fortunately, some KFCs have a long history of donating food through their Harvest program through which restaurants supply local charities, food banks and shelters with surplus cooked chicken every day.

03

TACO BELL

HOW MUCH FOOD DOES TACO BELL WASTE?

Of the franchises that I have presented, Taco Bell is luckily the fast food restaurant that wastes the least food unlike the other 2. Currently, less than 3% of Taco Bell sales are comprised of waste, thanks to diligent team members trained on how to best project and prepare how much food is needed.Taco Bell, has various processes in place to manage leftover food in a sustainable and responsible manner. One common practice is to donate excess food to local food banks or charitable organizations to minimize waste and help those in need. Additionally, some Taco Bell locations may have composting programs in place to dispose of organic waste in an environmentally friendly way.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

  • Currently, there is a growing trend in which customers request uneaten food to take home, which means a reduction in food waste in bars and restaurants. In this study, only in 37.1% of the businesses the customer takes part of the uneaten food home.
The solution to the food waste problem could be to implement this authorization for customers to bring their food. In addition, the remaining food will be distributed to helpless communities.
