Why Talking About Racism Can Reduce Descrimination....

Honest Talk About Racism

Equality: People are treated the same no matter what they look like or where they come from.

  • Racism is developed through social and cultrual ideas and then these ideas are brought into schools.
  • Ex: White families are wealthier and have more stuff. Colored families have lower income and not as nice of things.
  • Stereotypes are formed: White kids don't want to play with colored kids and colored kids don't want to play with white kids
  • Talking about our thoughts on different races decreases these stereotypes and builds equality.
(Sullivan, 2022)

Racism: The goal is to treat unfairly on the basis of race

Impact of Racial Discrimination

Example: Girls are not as good at sports as boys.

Racial discrimination is discrimination against any person based on their race, ethnicity, and skin color. 1. Examples (black, white, old, young) 2. Characterisitcs (good, bad, smart) Can be destructive because people are judging on these differences

Think and Share with a partner: what is an impact of racial discrimination? Does it directly affect you?

1. You will be divided into groups and assigned a number (1, 2, 3, 4). Each number corresponds to a photo. 2. You will look over the photo that is assigned to the number you are assigned. 3. In 10 minutes, you will meet with the others of your assigned number (so all 2's are together) to discuss the questions that are on the next slide. 4. After 10 minutes of discussion, you will then get into groups so there is one person with each number (1, 2, 3, and 4) are in a group. You will then share and discuss the similarities and differences between the photos.
